Day 1

SEVEN-DAY SAFARI

CLIMBS

Kilimanjaro Climb (Marangu Route) 5 days:

Day 1
Early breakfast, then transfer to Kilimanjaro’s Marangu gate for start of climb. Initial walking is through the rain forest for about 3 hours, then reach Mandara Hut (@3000m) for overnight.

Day 2
After breakfast, continue ascending through Alpine-type areas (heath and moorland vegetation) for about 4 hours until reaching Horombo Hut (@3962m) for our overnight.

Day 3
After breakfast, continue ascending through semi-desert terrain for approximately 4 hours. Overnight at Kibo Hut (@4500m).

Day 4
Rise in the early morning to start the final climb. This leg of the journey will take approximately 3 hours to reach the summit of Uhuru
Peak (@5895m) Descend back to Horombo Hut for overnight.

Day 5
After breakfast, descend back to Marangu gate where our vehicle will be
waiting to provide your transfer back to Arusha for overnight.

Kilimanjaro Climb (Machame Route) 6 DAYS:

Day 1
We begin with a one-hour drive from the lodge in Arusha to the Machame gate (1490m) for registration. Here we meet the rest of the crew (cooks and porters) and ready ourselves for the climb. We will start the climb through rainforest and the giant heathers for 6 hrs to our first overnight camp, Machame Hut Camp (3000m).

Day 2
Shira Camp (3840m)
Short day but rather steep rocky and dusty trails. It's a slow hike
with plenty of breaks and enough time to acclimatize. Most of the
route is rather bare of vegetation providing little shade from the heat. You will cross many ridges and begin to see senecias, a strange and unique cactus-like plant that is indigenous to the area.

Day 3
Barranco Camp (3840m)
Start with climbing over boulders and very few rocks, then steady
uphill climb to Lava tower, also called Shark’s Tooth. We then stop for lunch around noon. For those interested we may climb up the Lava tower, which is 4650m. (At this point you may start to get a mild headache due to the altitude change). From Lava tower we descend for about 2 hrs through dusty and rocky trails to the Barranco Camp.

Day 4
Barafu Camp (4550m)
Short but steep and tough climb today across barren landscape with many
boulders and scree. On this section of the climb you will pass by the Decken glacier. Continuing along this craggy ridge, we reach our next camp, Barafu (Swahili for “ice”) which is on a rocky slope beneath very steep cliff faces. We will go to bed very early because we must be well rested for the final climb to the summit. We rise at 11pm the same night to start day 5.

Day 5
Summit Day and Mweka Hut
We will start the climb at around midnight. Encountering very
steep rocks for the first hour, we then enter a snow covered area from which you can see glaciers above. If it's a moonlight night, you may be able to turn off your headlamp and walk in the moonlight. It is a wonderful experience! During the next two hours to Stella Point, we will break every fifteen minutes, as the climb becomes more mentally and physically challenging. Upon entering Stella Point, the lava fields are like loose sand. It's very funny and frustrating because you will take a step up, then slide back, at times gaining no distance. If not careful, sometimes sliding backward two steps for every two steps forward. After a short break we reach the summit of Kilimanjaro! We arrive at the summit (Uhuru Peak) approximately one hour before sunrise occurs over the Mawenzi peaks. The elevation is 5895m or 19370ft. Here we will eat and have a good rest before we proceed down to Hut Camp.

Day 6
Descent and return to Arusha
From Hut Camp we start our descent down to the park gate through steep slopes and very slippery conditions. We arrive at the gate around 11:00am to sign out and to receive your certificates! Say goodbye to the crew (your porters and cooks). Drive back to Arusha for a nice hot shower and time to relax and reflect upon this wonderful experience. Dinner and overnight at Arusha hotel.

After breakfast, drive to Momella gate, start the climb, walk
through the rain forest for about 3hours and reach Miriakamba Hut
(2800m.)

Day 2

vegetation for about 3hours and reach Saddle hut (3500m)

Day 3
Early morning ascend to the Meru Summit (4566m), then
descend back to the Momella Gate where our vehicle will be waiting to
provide the transfer to Arusha. Overnight at Impala Hotel. Breakfast included next morning.

Initial walking is through the rain forest for about 3 hours, then reach Mandara Hut (@3000m) for overnight. Day 2 After breakfast, continue ascending through Alpine-type areas (heath and moorland vegetation) for about 4 hours until reaching Horombo Hut (@3962m) for our overnight. Day 3 After breakfast, continue ascending through semi-desert terrain for approximately 4 hours. Overnight at Kibo Hut (@4500m). Day 4 Rise in the early morning to start the final climb. Kilimanjaro Climb (Machame Route) 6 DAYS: Day 1 We begin with a one-hour drive from the lodge in Arusha to the Machame gate (1490m) for registration. Here we meet the rest of the crew (cooks and porters) and ready ourselves for the climb. We will start the climb through rainforest and the giant heathers for 6 hrs to our first overnight camp, Machame Hut Camp (3000m). Day 2 Shira Camp (3840m) Short day but rather steep rocky and dusty trails. It's a slow hike with plenty of breaks and enough time to acclimatize. Most of the route is rather bare of vegetation providing little shade from the heat. You will cross many ridges and begin to see senecias, a strange and unique cactus-like plant that is indigenous to the area. Day 3 Barranco Camp (3840m) Start with climbing over boulders and very few rocks, then steady uphill climb to Lava tower, also called Shark’s Tooth. We then stop for lunch around noon. For those interested we may climb up the Lava tower, which is 4650m. (At this point you may start to get a mild headache due to the altitude change). From Lava tower we descend for about 2 hrs through dusty and rocky trails to the Barranco Camp. Day 4 Barafu Camp (4550m) Short but steep and tough climb today across barren landscape with many boulders and scree. On this section of the climb you will pass by the Decken glacier. Continuing along this craggy ridge, we reach our next camp, Barafu (Swahili for “ice”) which is on a rocky slope beneath very steep cliff faces. We will go to bed very early because we must be well rested for the final climb to the summit. We rise at 11pm the same night to start day 5. Day 5 Summit Day and Mweka Hut We will start the climb at around midnight. Encountering very steep rocks for the first hour, we then enter a snow covered area from which you can see glaciers above. If it's a moonlight night, you may be able to turn off your headlamp and walk in the moonlight. It is a wonderful experience! During the next two hours to Stella Point, we will break every fifteen minutes, as the climb becomes more mentally and physically challenging. Upon entering Stella Point, the lava fields are like loose sand. It's very funny and frustrating because you will take a step up, then slide back, at times gaining no distance. If not careful, sometimes sliding backward two steps for every two steps forward. After a short break we reach the summit of Kilimanjaro! We arrive at the summit (Uhuru Peak) approximately one hour before sunrise occurs over the Mawenzi peaks. The elevation is 5895m or 19370ft. Here we will eat and have a good rest before we proceed down to Hut Camp. Day 6 Descent and return to Arusha From Hut Camp we start our descent down to the park gate through steep slopes and very slippery conditions. We arrive at the gate around 11:00am to sign out and to receive your certificates! Say goodbye to the crew (your porters and cooks). Drive back to Arusha for a nice hot shower and time to relax and reflect upon this wonderful experience.
